To discuss the current situation in the European Union (EU) amidst the new geopolitical landscape, the high-level international conference "EU Conversations 2024: EU as a Secure Home in Today's Geopolitical Landscape" is scheduled for April 8. This conference is organized by the Latvian Institute of International Affairs (LIIA) in collaboration with the European Commission's representation in Latvia and the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia.

The conference will be attended by Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President, European Commission; Jim Cloos, TEPSA Secretary General, former Deputy Director-General, General Secretariat of the Council; Dr. Risto Erkki Juhani Penttilä, Secretary General, European Business Leaders’ Convention; Dr. Roberts Zīle, Vice President, European Parliament, Martin Schulz, Former President of the European Parliament; and others.

The conference has become an annual tradition and this year it will be held for the ninth time.  This year, which marks the twentieth anniversary of the EU's most significant enlargement, will focus on the ten countries that joined the EU in 2004 and the achievements of the European Union over the past twenty years. During the conference, we will delve into today's geopolitical dynamics, assess the resilience of the EU economy, and discuss key topics such as EU nuclear energy, climate change and agricultural policy. On defence, we will speak about border resilience, migration challenges and the EU's quest for strategic autonomy. We will also discuss EU space initiatives and the development of artificial intelligence.

The conference will feature three in-person panel discussions and seven online discussions, organised in cooperation with the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University in Lithuania (TSPMI VU), the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS), the Danish think tank Tænketanken EUROPA, as well as the Finnish and Swedish Institutes of International Affairs.

This year, the event will take place simultaneously in Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen.
