The Future of Belarus in the Shadow of the War
The Latvian Institute of International Affairs invites you to a public discussion "The Future of Belarus in the Shadow of the War". The event will take place on 27 October, 16:30-18:00 at Pullman Riga Old Town (Jēkaba street 27).
Please, register for the event here: https://bit.ly/3etAKTc.
Since the onset of the war in neighboring Ukraine, Belarus has almost disappeared from the agenda of regional policymakers. The question of how to support the opposition and civil society of Belarus to help ensure its sovereign, democratic status is ever more pertinent. The public discussion will gather prominent historians, academics and journalists to discuss the most relevant contemporary political and security ongoings in Belarus and the country's possible future trajectories.
- Stefan Eriksson, Former Ambassador of Sweden to Belarus, currently Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia;
- Siarhei Pelesa, Progamming Editor of Belsat TV;
- Lizaveta Dubinka-Hushcha, PhD, Assistant Lecturer at Copenhagen Business School and Associate Professor at European Humanities University;
- David R. Marples, PhD, Distinguished University Professor of Russian and East European History, University of Alberta.
The event will be moderated by Uģis Lībietis, Associate Researcher at the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.
The event also serves as a venue to introduce the public to the Belarus Research Network on Neighborhood Policy. The Network is a shared initiative of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, the Danish Institute of International Affairs and the Center for Belarus and Regional Studies at the European Humanitarian University. Producing an in-depth debate on Belarus and informing the wider audience to ensure that Belarus is topical in the regional agenda are the main goals of the Network.
The Belarus Research Network on Neighborhood Policy is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Please, note that the event will take place in English. By entering the premises of the event, you agree that your photos may be taken and disseminated on the website of LIIA and affiliated institutions.
